Ready, Set, Glow Manchester! – 24 July 2024

Now you know what we’re offering, hear from one of our Manchester sellers – @projectilevomit_ if you’re not convinced!

We interviewed ALICE FENDER the girl behind @projectilevomit, her Depop handle. Alice a born raised Mancunian tells us how she turned her Rags to Riches.

First year of university, your student finance is now non-existent, you have ten pounds to your name, your wardrobe is full (you’ve brought way too many clothes from home), and you’ve been wearing the same five outfits on rotation. Sound familiar? Full-time student and part-time Depoper, Alice Fender, laughs a little recalling her hardships before she found her Depop handle.

What was your first interaction with Depop?

It was around 2022, Covid had just ended, (for the last time) and I had so many clothes. I went through so many phases – emo, skater, y2k – I just went crazy, there was nothing to do but buy clothes and, in the end, I didn’t end up wearing half of them. I had heard about Depop, but it wasn’t until I started university that I realised I had to get rid of most of my clothes before I left. I remember first getting it [Depop] and thinking that it left a lot of space for creativity to come into play and that’s important to me being an art student – that I’m able to express myself freely. So, after a week of organising my wardrobe, I put up all the clothes I didn’t want, and everyday there was a new offer for clothes I was selling or people asking if I had more stock of what I had sold, it was a perfect way for me to sustainably upcycle my wardrobe and I never stopped since then.

Do you plan on taking part in the Depop Marketplace?

I’m super excited for the Depop Marketplace, I’ve made a few friends through the app, and I’ll finally be able to meet them in person at the marketplace.

Being a university student means I’m often cooped up in my studio or in my room, so getting out and meeting new people, and potentially making friends is always exciting to me. I live in London but I’m from the countryside and it was a massive culture shock – there isn’t a lot of green spaces in London. I’m excited to see where the Marketplace will be held and finding new places in London, I’m not yet aware of.  I’m also anxious to see people’s faces in real-life when they’re browsing my work, you can’t really read emotion over social platforms, so this is a great opportunity for me. It’ll be my first time doing something so independent, putting myself out there to the public and hopefully there’s a positive reaction.
