EFFECTS OF LOCKDOWN ON YOUNG PEOPLE AND THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Partnered with Fitbit

”Lockdown was difficult. I felt down and just like everybody else I had enough of it. I could name at least five people that have developed severe anxiety or even depression, and after two years with the number of cases still rising it begs the question, when is this all going to end? As Robert H. Schuller once said ”Tough times never last, but tough people do” a quote used those with an optimistic mindset, that is so crucial in order to pull through this pandemic. I would like to think that I am an optimist myself and I have been pleasantly surprised to find out that the number of young people socialising outside post pandemic is rapidly growing. It did not require a case study or a research article for me to see the change. My local park is filled with Gen Z’s and I must admit that it brings a smile to my face. Seeing them play football and basketball or riding their bikes brings me back to the pre pandemic times when we were all free and not limited”

INTERVIEW

To what extent did you struggle with your mental health during lockdown, was it serious?

”Yes, I would definitely consider myself depressed and mentally drained in lockdown. During the first lockdown I had gained a lot of weight, due to poor eating habits I had developed and mainly the lack of exercise.”

What was the turning point?

‘I would say the turning point was when my and my friend started going on our daily walks. I was keen on participating in physical activity, as I finally found someone that wanted to get out of the house and it motivated me. As the time progressed I could see myself losing weight and feeling more comfortable in my own body. In a sense it was therapeutic as not only was I able to stay active but also talk about my problems with a friend”
